Help wanted

After losing my FijiFilm FinePix f50 12 MP camera last summer to unknown circumstances, I believe that I need to get me a new digital camera. I am doing so much fun stuff right now, I would really hate to look back one day and wish that I had photographs of it...

Any camera suggestions?

Small Point-&-Shoot? Canon IXUS variation

Slightly larger Point-&-Shoot? Canon G10 (or even the slightly older G9)

Small dSLR? Nikon D80 (or newer D90 if you've got the cash)

Larger dSLR? Nikon D300.

:D

Thanks Loki, how are things going with you in Queensland?

My safest choice I guess would be the Canon G10. My only problem would be figuring out what to do with 14 MegaPixels of resolution...

I don't have any experience with dSLRS, do they require a lot of maintenance and buying different lenses and accessories and stuff?

Hey Snake, all is well here, thanks. Hope you're settling in ok. :)

dSLRs don't require extra maintenance as such, and if you get one lens that does everything you want, then there's no real need for extra ones... but you've always got the choice. Sometimes (if you do change lenses) dust can get inside and cause tiny specks on your photos, but that's fairly easy to fix.

But, unless you know you want to explore photography more, then I'd say stick with the P&S models - much more compact. I have an IXUS that I carry in my handbag all the time, and it's a great size, but if I was in the market now for a non-dSLR camera, I'd be looking very hard at the G9/G10. I believe they give you great control over the camera so if you do want to try some more arty stuff, you can.

G10 is a *very* new model so I don't know what prices are like. It might not even be available yet? If it was significantly more expensive than the G9, then you shouldn't lose too much by going with the older model - it's only been out about 12 months anyway.

Cheers
